Amhold is realizing the design work of six hospital laboratories in Uganda

28.08.2014

The Government of Uganda has ordered from Amhold Ltd the design, construction management and supervision of six hospital laboratories, within the Medical Laboratories Network Project. The project will transform the life of 28 million people into a more secure and healthier direction.

The Ministry of Justice has validated the respective contract on 6thof August 2012. Amhold will realize engineering-technical, environmental and architectural-historical research, complex design work (including medical-technological part and the cost calculation of construction works, equipment and furniture), preparation of tender documentation, construction management, professional consultancy and supervision work set by contract.

Following medical laboratory buildings within the Medical Laboratories Network Project, which is financed by International Development Association (IDA), are designed and supervised-managed during the construction:

* AruaRegional Hospital – the service area includes 3 million people, including border areas of Southern Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo;

* GuluDistrict Hospital and university hospital - the service area includes 4 million people, including border areas of Southern Sudan;

* MbaleRegional Hospital - the service area includes 4 million people, including border areas of Western Kenya;

* MbararaRegional Hospital and university hospital - the service area includes 5 million people, including border areas of Rwanda, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo;

* MulagoNational Hospitaland university hospital - the service area includes 7 million people;

* UgandaNational Tuberculosis Laboratory and Butabika District Hospital - the service area includes 5 million people.

Local engineers from partner firm in Uganda, engineering companies from Estonia, scientists from University of Tartu, specialists from international organizations as well as local experienced medical staff are involved in the project. The laboratory buildings are designed in accordance to nowadays medical excellency and highest standards. The laboratories in completion, including the bacteriology and AIDS laboratories are serving the everyday need of analyzes making in hospitals as well as educational and scientific purpose.

The hospital buildings are located on the edge of East African rift valley area and in seismically active region, which means that the infrastructure will be designed to bear up against strong earthquakes and have a independent energy source, because precisely after the earthquake the exponentially strong need for medical services is required and laboratories are one of the basic components of provided medical aid. Some hospitals in the region are built in 1930s, which makes them architectural monuments. Because of that, the conservation of initial architecture and adjustment with newly designed parts is an important component of the project.
